Does euthanasia hurt my dog?

I have read a few articles about this and almost always a sedative is mentioned. Last week a vet came to my home to put my dog to rest. My dog was given 1 shot that took approximately 10-15 seconds. My fear/question is if my dog was not asleep beforehand, would he have felt the stopping of his heart and inability to breathe?
