Gear ratio question for a VW Transporter?

The reason the gearing is so low, is that you have a small engine toting around a heavy vehicle. If you raise the gearing, the engine will struggle to move it. Diesels produce their torque at lower speeds generally than a gasoline engine, and work better with lower gears.
